Our Story
There were many doubts and uncertainties, but I knew that I needed to take a leap of faith and follow my passion for agriculture and entrepreneurship. As a graduate of Statistics and a 8-year stint in banking industry, I had little to no experience in farming, and agribusiness but my mentor, Mr Richard Orogun and other great plantain farmers were there as strong supports to guide and teach me. I learned everything from land preparation, planting to harvesting, and even managing and marketing our produce and profitable value addiction options for our perishable farm produce.
We are committed to promoting a healthy and balanced lifestyle for everyone no matter their dietary requirements.
The first three years were tough. Long hours under the scorching sun, tedious manual labour, constant supervision of farm workers and the frequent travels to the farm were all part of the learning process. But with each passing day, I felt a sense of fulfillment and purpose that I had never experienced before. I was no longer just sitting behind a computer in the banking industry but I was out in the fields, working with great determination and creating something tangible by contributing to national food security obligation. Our efforts paid off, and our plantain farm business started to thrive. We were able to sell our produce at local markets and even started supplying to a major plantain processing company in Lagos.
I was amazed at how much I had learned and accomplished few years after. But the best part of this journey was being able to create job opportunities for members of the community and help contribute to the local economy by empowering woman and youths. It’s been 12 years since that life-changing visit to my wife’s family home in Ode Lemo, near Sagamu. Today, our farm business has expanded to include production of plantain chips, plantain flour, poundo yam processing and many other products. Our branded products are now in major supermarkets across the country. We have also implemented sustainable farming practices and have become a model for other small-scale farmers not only in the community but in Nigeria.
JKB brand is now known as a number one choice for everything plantains. Looking back, I am grateful for the opportunity that was presented to me by my wife’s family. Their invitation not only allowed me to reconnect with my roots, but it also sparked a new passion and career path for me. I am proud to be a part of the agricultural industry and am constantly learning and growing in this field. So to anyone who may be hesitant to step out of their comfort zone and try something new – take the leap. You never know where it may lead you, and you may just discover a new passion and purpose in life.
